Every year the careers service organises two part-time work fairs on campus. The Autumn fair takes place today from 12.00pm – 2.30pm in the students union. Local employers are coming onto campus to recruit students for a variety of vacancies in the area. Remember you need to be realistic. Most student jobs are in catering and hospitality or in sales and retail. Campus jobs are advertised by departments on Message of the Day and on notice-boards throughout the college. Other positions can be found at JobOnline. Click here for other part-time work ideas. Read the rest of this entry »

Surinder Arora confirmed for Dragons’ Den
Posted by rhulcareers on September 28, 2009
Entrepreneur and Hotel owner Surinder Arora has been confirmed as one of the “Dragons” attending the Royal Holloway Entrepreneurs event on October 8th. Born in the Punjab, Surinder is now one of Britain’s leading hoteliers with a portfolio including the famous Arora hotels at Heathrow.
The Dragons Den event invites any student with an idea, be it commercial or social, to pitch in front of a panel of business experts with the possibility of winning the £1000 cash prize. Any student from any department can enter and entry forms are available around campus (including the students union and careers centre).
Students unaware of the format of the television series Dragons Den, on which this event is based, can watch one on the BBC website here. You can find out more about the event through the Royal Holloway Entrepreneurs website.

Have you got a great idea?
Posted by rhulcareers on September 25, 2009
Royal Holloway Entrepreneurs have an exciting programme of events coming up in the Autumn term
The main event is Dragons Den, a version of the hit BBC television programme. If you have a great idea and think that you can take on the Dragons and win – on your own or in a team of up to 4 – enter their fantastic Dragons’ Den competition.
Finalists will be put straight through to face the Dragons, but if you don’t make it through, you can still enter via the Dragon Teams workshop.
Remember, your idea doesn’t need to be commercial but it could be social entrepreneurial or other. There are flyers around campus (and in the careers service) and you can post your ideas through the Dragons Den boxes in the students union and careers centre.
For more information visit their website.

Less than one week to go…
Posted by rhulcareers on September 15, 2009
It is less than one week to the start of the new term. Over the summer we have been working hard in the careers service to ensure the Autumn term is packed with exciting and relevent careers activities for you.
If this is your first time in the UK and at Royal Holloway it may take you a little time to adjust, but there is plenty of support out there to help you fit in. The International team are on top of logistics and everyone who has arranged for an airport pick-up will be met and escorted directly to the college. From the moment you land we are there to help.
The first week can be a bit daunting. There are lots of events going on including departmental, student union and other campus events. This year you can attend a video giving you a “survival guide” to University. This will take place in the Windsor Auditorium on Wednesday 23r September from 5.00pm – details and free tickets can be obtained on campus from Founders West 170.
Until next week, the careers service wishes all who are travelling a safe trip to the UK and a great start to your time at Royal Holloway.
