Hours of work paid off

Posted by rhulcareers on May 21, 2009

Jiafeng Li is a former Royal Holloway student who currently works in the careers centre as an assistant. Jiafeng has put in many hours of work to develop our first international careers fair. She writes for the blog below:

Under the circumstances of the global credit crunch, employment is at the top of governments’ agendas. For overseas students in UK, it is an even severer challenge to excel over local students and successfully secure a job back in their home countries. Read the rest of this entry »

Exciting events programme launched!

Posted by rhulcareers on April 25, 2009

Easter is usually the time when students are studying and getting concerned about Finals. However there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Once the exam period is over we have an extensive careers programme of events for you to attend – and now you have no lectures to go to, there is no excuse for not attending! Details of the careers service’s summer programme are available here.

As part of our generic programme we are running a series of “Don’t Panic” sessions which aim to give you the skills and expertise to find your way into graduate employment despite the current labour market situation.  There is a session called “Second class degree, first class career” (I thought of the title so blame me!) to help students who may have not got the degree level they were hoping for. We also have a session about public sector jobs which may give you an idea of what is available. The public sector can often recruit non-EU candidates for certain roles.  This year we have also arranged for a number of recruitment agencies to attend the campus in a sort of mini careers fair – more details soon.

And to finish off the international student careers programme for the year I have arranged two specific events. On June 1 you can come along to “Working in the UK” where non-EU alumni share their experience of finding work and living in the UK – from visas to finding work, business culture and making friends.  And then on June 2 we have the college’s first ever international student careers fair. We have eight organisations coming onto campus who are interested in non-EU students for positions in the UK and overseas.  Details of the companies attending will be available on this blog soon but as a taster I can confirm that we have Bank of America, Gartner and CMC Consulting.

Employers give up time and resources to attend the campus and a poor turnout means they are unlikely to return. Even though the exams are over please make every effort to attend.  There are very limited spaces available for the international events due to the anticpated popularity of recruitment events. You MUST sign up in advance using the keywords here. For generic programme events you need to sign up in person at the careers centre.

Events Today: Annual RHUL Careers Fair

Posted by rhulcareers on October 29, 2008

The high profile Royal Holloway Careers Fair will open its doors at 11am in the Picture Gallery. Remember that employers are generally here to “sell” one or two career paths but that does not mean that there are no other careers available – for example, PWC recruits for accountancy but they also need IT professionals, human resources etc – ask them! Also remember to try to get their business card because if you do apply to them in the future, it might be useful to mention you have met them.  For more information on how to make the most out of careers fairs click here.

Not all employers will recruit international students. A list of employers recruiting international students can be found here - bear in mind that this is accurate as we can make it but if you find different information please let us know!

Organisations attending today who have confirmed they are recruiting international students are: Proctor & Gamble, JPMorgan, Tessella, Enterprise Rent-a-car, NDS, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Logica, Research in Motion, Jacobs, Deloitte, Ernst & Young.  Some of these companies may only take students at certain levels or on certain types of permits – or potential to achieve them. Others have not confirmed and may be worth speaking to directly.

You can view videos from employers attending today by clicking here.

TOMORROW: LONDON GRADUATE RECRUITMENT FAIR

Posted by rhulcareers on October 20, 2008

The London Graduate Recruitment Fair takes place at the Business Design Centre, Islington (nearest Tube: Angel – directions).

The following organisations have confirmed they will be exhibiting at The Guardian London Graduate Fair from The Careers Group on 21 October 2008. Remember, not all organisations recruit international students but you should always ask! Click here to find out how to make the most of the fair.

At the fair you can get your CV checked but queues tend to be very long (over one hour wait) – why not book an appointment in the careers centre instead?

Click on each company name to go through to their own website to find out more.

Is the outlook so bad?

Posted by rhulcareers on October 14, 2008

Yesterday’s Graduate Select event was very succesful given the current climate in the financial sector. Whilst there were fewer exhibitors to previous years, those who were there were certainly actively recruiting in various fields. Before we opened to the public I surveyed as many of the exhibitors as I could to find out where they stood on recruiting international students. The response was very positive – more companies welcomed applications than previously. This could be because the two-year Post-Study Work visa makes international students more attractive, it could also be because international students have qualities and attributes that home students may not – for example, experience of other cultures, ability to adapt to change, and languages.

The careers centre will update our database of international student friendly employers soon and I will publish the link again then. In the meantime the following companies spoke to me yesterday about their policies for recruiting international students. All  of the list below recruit international students:

British Telecom (BT)

Royal Bank of Scotland

Sungard

Sky Broadcasting

Ernst & Young

PA Consulting Group – Highly Skilled Migrant Programme only

CRA International – Forensics

PWC

Diamond Consultants

Mercer

Back from the summer…

Zara recruits in China

Zara recruits in China

The careers service’s Autumn programme is about to be launched. This year the International Student Programme has been incorporated into it – watch out for international student specific events and keep up to date with this blog! The programme is more extensive than in previous years with even more employers visiting the campus and providing skills sessions.  In the international student programme, Chinese students should watch out for presentations from PWC and Zara China. Other employers attending include Credit Suisse and Proctor & Gamble both of whom have an excellent record of recruiting international students.

Further information about the Autumn careers programme will be available here. This blog will keep you up to date as the programme progresses. Please remember that you may need to book to attend some events.
