January is usually a month where people are finding money tight. Perhaps you went home for Christmas and are now broke because the pound sterling isn’t, erm, doing so well!
The part-time work fair tomorrow may just help! Remember, most non-EU students are allowed to work up to twenty hours per week during term time, and forty in vacation periods. Even if you earned just the minimum wage you could earn over £110 per week! Many employers will pay above the minimum wage.
So what do you need to do?
Come along to the part-time work fair tomorrow from 12pm – 3.00pm in the students’ union. You will find a wide range of local employers including telephone market research, catering and leisure. Remember, be realistic – you are unlikely to find part-time work closely related to your degree but any job should increase your employability for the future! The list of employers attending and their websites is here.
There is a CV session this evening at 5.00pm in HLT2 if you need to prepare one for tomorrow.
If you work you also need to pay tax. Sorry! Click here to view previous blog entries about getting a national insurance number.

Students new to the UK may be surprised by some of the activity taking place today.
Today is Guy Fawkes Day- a day of fireworks and celebration. The day is used to celebrate the failure of a plot to destroy Parliament and King James I. More information can be found here. Guy Fawkes is usually celebrated with fireworks and the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes.
