New work permit laws announced
Posted by rhulcareers on May 6, 2008

Over the past year the UK has been moving to a points-based immigration system. Details of Tier 2 were announced today by the Home Office. Tier 2 replaces the existing requirements to have a work permit. This does not affect students working part-time or doing internships. It also does not affect students joining the International Graduates Scheme (now called Tier 1 Post-Study Work). It may affect graduates who have completed the IGS and now want to stay permanently in the UK. Strict rules apply to companies wishing to recruit at that stage and they have to demonstrate a skill shortage that cannot be filled from EEA candidates. However the rules also appear to imply that if you are already working (e.g. in a graduate scheme job) then switching to this Tier 2 will still be possible.
